What is the Calming Corner?

Calming Corner'The Calming Corner at Civic Center Library, located in the youth area, is a dedicated safe space for children, their families, and caregivers to use when a child is experiencing big emotions or sensory overload.

The environment is designed to help children take a break from overstimulation, regain control of their emotions, or regroup when feeling overwhelmed. The space promotes self-regulation and offers an opportunity for children to develop healthy coping skills in a nurturing, supportive setting.

Equipped with sensory-friendly toys, books on emotions and calming techniques, soft seating, and soothing lighting, the Calming Corner provides a variety of tools to help children feel more grounded and focused. Whether they need a quiet moment to themselves for distance from over-stimulating activities, or gentle guidance to manage their emotions, this space encourages emotional well-being and resilience.

How do I use the Calming Corner?

Caregivers or children ages twelve years and up can request room usage at the youth desk. A staff member will provide access to the space. The Calming Corner is only big enough for one family, or group to use at a time. Optimum occupancy is three or fewer individuals. Children under twelve years of age may not be left unattended in the room. The area may be used for a maximum of 30 minutes. When finished using the room, notify a staff member at the youth desk for sign out. The library Rules of Conduct apply to the Calming Corner.

Please note: the Calming Corner is not intended as a play area. The sensory-friendly items within are designed to provide a low-stimulation environment for those seeking a calming experience.
